VALECO is a non-for-profit membership association that advocates for the common interests of Virginia's five local elected constitutional offices -- Commissioners of the Revenue, Commonwealth's Attorneys, Clerks of the Circuit Courts, Sheriffs and Treasurers.
A core group of constitutional officers from across Virginia came together in 1976 to discuss shared concerns. The result of their gatherings was the creation of a single, "umbrella" organization to which all local elected constitutional officers would be welcome to join. Sheriff John Newhart of Chesapeake was elected VALECO's first president in 1976.
VALECO is governed by an Executive Committee that consists of its six officers (a President, four Vice Presidents, a Secretary-Treasurer, and the Immediate Past President) and the current presidents of the five associations that advocate for their respective offices -- the Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia, the Virginia Commonwealth's Attorneys' Association, the Virginia Court Clerks Association, the Virginia Sheriffs Association, and the Treasurers Association of Virginia. The VALECO presidency rotates among the five offices. By longstanding tradition, VALECO acts on specific issues only with the consent of all five associations.
Full membership in VALECO is open to all local elected constitutional officers in Virginia. Annual dues are payable to the Secretary-Treasurer. See the "Membership" page for more details!
